What Is Vinyl Sticker Printing?

Vinyl sticker printing uses a large format or cut vinyl printer to produce custom stickers on a self-adhesive vinyl material. The result is a flexible, waterproof sticker that can be applied to most clean, smooth, dry surfaces. Unlike paper stickers, vinyl holds up to moisture, UV light and general handling — making it suitable for outdoor and long-term applications.

Vinyl stickers are available in printed or cut-only forms. Printed vinyl stickers are produced with full-colour artwork printed onto the vinyl and then cut to shape. Cut vinyl stickers use a single-colour vinyl material that is cut to a shape or lettering using a plotter, with no printing involved. Most branded and decorative stickers you see on business vehicles, shop windows and equipment are printed vinyl.

Indoor vs Outdoor Vinyl: What’s the Difference?

The most important specification question for any vinyl sticker is whether it will be used indoors or outdoors. This determines the type of vinyl material required and affects both the adhesive strength and the lifespan of the finished product.

Outdoor vinyl

Outdoor vinyl is designed to resist UV light, rain, temperature changes and general weathering. A quality outdoor vinyl sticker applied correctly to a clean surface can last several years without fading or lifting. The two main types are cast vinyl and calendered vinyl — cast is more conformable and durable (commonly used for vehicle graphics), while calendered is better suited to flat surfaces like windows, walls and signage.

If a sticker is going on a vehicle — even just on a flat panel — cast vinyl is the right choice. It conforms better to rivets, edges and curves without lifting or cracking over time.

Indoor vinyl

Indoor vinyl is not UV or weather resistant. It’s perfectly suited for product labels, display stickers, office branding, window graphics that are sheltered from direct rain, and packaging. It’s usually less expensive than outdoor-rated material and comes in a wider range of surface finishes.

Rectangle and circle are the most common sticker shapes because they’re simple to produce and stack efficiently on a sheet. If your artwork suits one of these shapes, you’ll usually get the most cost-effective price per sticker. Square stickers are also popular, particularly for product packaging and branding applications.

Custom die cuts

Custom die-cut stickers are cut precisely around the outline of your artwork — so if your logo is an irregular shape, the sticker can match it exactly. This gives a much more professional finish than a rectangular sticker where blank vinyl is visible around the design. Die cutting adds a small amount to the production cost but makes a significant difference to how the finished sticker looks.

How to choose a size

Think about where the sticker will be applied and from what distance it will be read. For vehicle decals and window graphics, size is often dictated by the panel or window space available. For product labels, consider the surface area of the product and how much information needs to be legible. Always check that your artwork is set up at the correct final size before sending files.

Getting Your Artwork Ready

Vinyl sticker printing produces the best results when artwork is supplied correctly. Here’s what to prepare before you place an order.

File format

PDF is the safest format for supplying sticker artwork. Vector PDFs (created in Illustrator, Affinity Designer or similar) are ideal because logos and text scale without loss of quality. If you’re supplying a raster image (Photoshop, photograph), make sure it’s at least 300 DPI at the intended final print size.

Colour mode

Set your artwork to CMYK rather than RGB. Screen colours (RGB) can look different when converted to print (CMYK), and supplying in CMYK gives you more control over the final colour output.

Bleed

For stickers being cut to shape, add 2–3mm of bleed around the outside of your design so the cut doesn’t land on a white edge. Your printer will advise on the exact bleed specification for your order.

Text and fine detail

Very small text and very thin lines can lose clarity at small print sizes. Check that any text in your sticker design is large enough to be legible at the final printed size before sending your file.
